In this session, we will define primary care practice by describing its role in the healthcare system. We will present the settings for this practice, knowledge and skills needed for success, and how physical therapists can be an asset on a primary care team. Primary care PT shows potential for transforming the healthcare system through more efficient and effective care practices in addition to meeting the needs of strained primary care practices. We will review the history that led up to physical therapists being included on primary care teams. There will be discussion about the difference between direct access and primary care PT. Ideas will be presented on how to hone your skills to practice in this setting. Implementation strategies for introducing primary care to your healthcare system will be discussed, highlighting available resources. We will conclude with discussion about the future of primary care and how we can continue to evolve in this setting to meet the needs of our patients and healthcare as a whole.
